HCR co-hosts Jenn Hebert and Tigger Montague discuss a new take on pollinator gardens:

Tigger: “So I read a very interesting article about planting a pollinator hedgerow.”

Jenn: “Oooh! I like the sound of that.”

TM: “So, you start with the bushes that are friendly to pollinators. You want things at different heights, so you’re going to start with the shrubs and, below them, you’re going to have the annuals that come up every year.”

JH: “When I envision hedgerow, I envision a row of bushes that are neatly manicured and all the same heights, [but] this is a more naturalistic-looking border. You have different types of plants that have different heights, different densities, different flowering habits…”

TM: “Yes, and flowering at different times. You don’t want them all flowering in June.”

JH: “Got it, because then the bees are all gonna be really hungry when it’s NOT June.”

TM: “Right. And here’s an interesting fact: more than a thousand of all pollinators are vertebrates.”

JH: “Nah!”

TM: “Birds, bats, small mammals…”

JH: “You always think a pollinator has to be a bee — but not necessarily.”

TM: “Nope.”
