Co-host Pati Pierucci explains why shipping horses requires preparation, starting weeks in advance:

“I start prepping beforehand… I feel it’s very important to keep the same schedule with food and hay a couple of weeks out. You know, don’t do any major changes. Because it takes horses a long time to adjust to different hay and grain, so I think that’s a big thing. Hay should be available to the horses throughout the trip. If you’re shipping yourself, make sure you have a nice big hay bag. If you’re doing it [commercially] with shippers, you’ll find that most of them are really wonderful about giving hay throughout the trip; when they stop they’ll give more hay and fill up water buckets, which is another important thing. […]

I give my horses salt every day, which also keeps them hydrated — encourages them to drink — especially when the weather changes. I really make sure that’s a big effort before the trip, because dehydration, which is a number one issue for traveling with horses, can start days before you even see the effects of it…”
