Dog trainer Karen Quinlan gives her thoughts on the trend of over-medicating our dogs for separation anxiety and other behavioral troubles:

“I think this is becoming a chronic issue for, not only separation anxiety, but pretty much anything people perceive as wrong with the dog. The first go-to is medication. For the most part, I’m anti-medication unless it is so, so severe that it’s a possibility. But the problem with a lot of these medications is that they kind of suppress. When you’re dealing with an emotional issue with a dog such as separation anxiety, which is fear…you’re just suppressing that, you’re not changing the underlying emotion. And if you can’t change the underlying emotion because our dogs’ brains are numb from these medications, nothing’s going to change. Sometimes I’ve seen these behaviors get worse. Because we don’t know how these drugs really affect a dog’s mind. Dogs were never, ever, ever, ever, ever meant to be on drugs — in my humble opinion…”
